In 1827 a Frenchman by the name of Joseph Nicephore, was playing around with a technique called holography. He conducted an experiment which involved pointing a camera out of a window, positioning it so that the lens would cast an image onto a pewter plate, coated with a light sensitive filament. Eight hours later the image above was created and is believed to be the oldest known surviving photograph.
